우리 시대 최고의 첼리스트 중 한 명인 랄프 커쉬바움이 젊은 파트너, 샤이 보즈너와 함께 베토벤의 첼로 소나타 전곡을 녹음했다. 높은 평가를 받았던 런던 연주회를 끝내고 위그모어홀에서 녹음한 이 음반에는 커쉬바움 특유의 넘치는 생동감이 가득하다. 커쉬바움은 아름다운 음색과 빼어난 밸런스, 그리고 자연스러운 표현을 들려주며, 보즈너의 지성적인 해석도 이상적인 동반자라고 할 수 있다.
이 모든 것이 조화롭게 엮인 5번 소나타, 깊은 감정과 극적인 음영을 갖춘 3번 소나타가 특히 인상적이며, 변주곡의 경쾌한 감정 표현 역시 노거장의 원숙한 모습을 보여준다.
