신성로마제국의 레오폴트 1세 황제는 아마도 서양음악 역사상 가장 음악적인 군주일 것이다. 음악을 깊이 사랑했던 황제는 자신의 궁정악단을 유럽 최고로 키운 것은 물론, 그 자신이 작곡가로 70여곡에 달하는 뛰어난 작품을 썼다. 이 음반에는 레오폴트 1세의 가장 대표적인 교회음악을 담겨 있으며, ‘황제는 슬픈 선율에서 특히 훌륭하다’라는 당대의 평가를 떠올리게 되는 레퀴엠과 ‘스타바트 마테르’ 등 어두운 분위기의 작품들이 인상적이다. 카펠라 무렌시스와 레 코르네츠 누와르는 단정하면서도 기악과 성악의 조화가 잘 어우러진 작품의 매력을 잘 살린 연주를 들려준다.
