20c 최고의 작곡가 중의 한 사람인 프로코피에프는 1942년 러시아의 거장 에이젠슈타인 감독의 새로운 역사 영화 [이반 뇌제]의 음악을 담당한다.

이 영화는 1945년에 제1부를 상연하여 스탈린 상을 수상했으나 제2부는 검열에 걸려서 상연이 금지되었다(1958년 이후 상연된다).

1960년 오리지날 영화의 사운드 트랙의 지휘자였던 아브람 스타세비치에 의해 오라토리오 형식으로 편곡되었다.
